Bixa orellana - also know as Achiote, Annatto, and Lipstick Plant. The seeds are used by some indigenous in South America as body and hair paint. It is a low cost substitute for saffron and is a natural food coloring. We grew this one from seed and it flowered quickly. It grows very fast here in Sarasota, where hummingbirds love the flowers. Can also be propagated by cuttings. We will be replanting in with our pet hens to give them cover. It grows too big for my little spice garden where I have it right now. Each year I trim it down to 24" and it grows 4 feet within 6 months.
